Introduction to Copywriting Print E-mail


Just because you like a piece of your creative writing, it doesn't necessarily follow that your target audience will be so appreciative of it that they will take the action which you seek. Even when you think that you have correctly adjusted the balance of inspiration, imagination and personalization, you have to consider the tricky area of subjectivity. What one person finds interesting another may find irrelevant. So, getting the message right is not as straightforward as you might at first think. But hang on, your very early creative writing and learning experiences may have already prepared you for a copywriting career.

From song writer to copywriter

From a very early age, creative writing plays an important role in your life. By understanding its role and influences, you can appreciate how it can be harnessed. From pre-school age, words accompanied by provocative images conjure powerful feelings and attitudes towards ourselves as well as the outside world. For example:

Put in a historical context, nursery rhymes may not really mean all that much to toddlers. Their immediate attractiveness lies in their essential rhythm. Once their basic sentiments can be understood - even at the most fundamental level - their influence on children becomes tremendously powerful, specifically by drawing them in group play.

That involvement enables a toddler to explore activities such as holding hands with others and then falling down to the ground on a key phrase (as in 'Ring-a-Ring-o'-Roses'), encouraging them to further explore the world through words.

What may appear everyday sentences to you and me are potentially great adventures of discovery for the preschool child.

Direction through words

The influence of the creative word through media such as books, videos, the Web and so on is that it trickle-feeds our subconscious. Take as an example tales from the Koran or the Bible. They are retold time and time again. Through listening to hem, we are intended to gain some kind of moral direction. History has placed us in some sort of social chronology. Through it, we discover how, throughout time, people have handled key decisions - the very same judgements that may also affect us: to fight, to try to negotiate, to explore. It's not surprising that the written word concerning historical, religious or fictional characters - and, more significantly, what they represent socially - impresses us deeply.

Role playing and leading

Throughout adolescence, words in pop songs take on particular relevance to our lives. Love songs, for instance, can help us recover from a broken first romance while still at school. Other songs may even enable us to express feelings of rebellion against all the history that has preceded us and to declare our intention to redirect the course in a new, fresh direction. Sometimes, the allure of songs and song writing is so strong that we form our own pop groups. For some, the creative lyric-writing process may turn what may be a boring English lesson into a voyage of self-awareness.

For others, just listening to songs, or maybe reading teen magazines about the singers, can provoke powerful images of empathy with the singer, whose words and performance often relate intimately to an adolescent's needs. This empathy with the singer often develops to such an extent that the pop fan's centre of attraction turns away from themselves to become a fascination with the singer and all that they represent. So begins a form of hero worshipping within which trends and ideals are set and followed.

All these forms of creative writing are an ideal preparation for the future copywriter. However, the emphasis of this style of writing, about you and your world, needs gradually to shift from what is personally motivating to what touches an audience. More often than not - as happens in the case of the singer who is followed by adoring fans - this can be the same thing.
